Why was the cashback received lower than expected?

There are three main reasons why your cashback may be lower:

  1. Transaction limit exceeded
Your purchase amount is higher than the cashback limit for that specific category.

  2. Period limit reached
You’ve reached your monthly or annual cashback limit for the current period.

  3. Incorrect Category

The transaction was not recognized under the category you expected, so a different (usually lower) cashback rate was applied.

(1 and 2) The transaction reached a limit

How is cashback calculated in these cases?

  • The category cashback rate (e.g., 2%, 3%) is applied only up to the category limit.

  • Any remaining amount may still earn cashback at the default/base rate (1%), if:

    • It’s eligible, and

    • You haven’t reached the default cashback limit.

  • If the default cashback limit is also reached, no further cashback is applied.

Examples

Example 1: Category limit exceeded

You spend €300 in a supermarket.

  • Category cashback: 2% of €250 (category limit)

  • Remaining €50:

    • Earns 1% cashback, if you haven’t reached the default cashback limit

Total cashback = (2% × €250) + (1% × €50)

Example 2: Monthly default limit nearly reached

You’ve already spent €2,800 in default cashback transactions in April.
You make a €400 purchase (not in a special category).

  • Monthly default cashback limit is €3,000

  • Remaining eligible amount: €200

Cashback = 1% of €200 only
No cashback on the remaining €200

The limit resets on May 1st - the first day of the following month

Example 3: Both category and default limits apply

You spend €100 on an Uber payment.

  • Category limit: €50

  • Remaining default cashback allowance: €20

Calculation:

  • 3% of €50 (category portion)

  • 1% of €20 (remaining default allowance)

  • No cashback on the remaining €30

Total cashback = (3% × €50) + (1% × €20)

(3) Why a transaction may not match the expected category

For a transaction to qualify for a specific cashback category:

  • The merchant must be classified with the correct MCC (Merchant Category Code).

  • For specific campaigns, the merchant name must clearly match the expected provider.

Example:
If you pay for a Claude subscription, the transaction description should clearly include “Claude” in the merchant name. Otherwise, it may not qualify for that category.
